TCA (Chemical) Peels
The objective of a chemical peel is to create a partial thickness chemical burn of the skin with the help of a caustic solution,the acid. This causes a breakdown and destruction of the top layers of the skin, followed by shedding. Depending on the depth of the peel (a medical grade peel is always deeper than what your aesthetician is allowed to achieve) your skin will look very youthful and free of blemishes, roughness and dullness after the peel. It gives the skin a glow that is unique and will last for a long time.
Chemical peels, when done well, have astonishing results. They are undervalued in aesthetics, yet can be the biggest bang for your buck. Some look so good after that they rival laser resurfacing at a fraction of the cost.
Here at MAI I do mostly TCA (TriChloroacetic Acid) peels. It is very safe, and the outcome is never disappointing.
As far as patient selection is concerned, fair skinned individuals obtain better results than those with pigmented skin or patients with thick, oily, porous skin. Peeling is also helpful for patients with blotchy pigmement after pregnancy and women with increased pigment from taking birth control pills. Severe sun damage is yet another good reason for doing an acid peel.
I have seen great reluctance in the acceptance of an acid peel for reasons that are not well understood by our patients. One reason is the word of mouth that this procedure stings severely. I hope word goes around after you had your acid peel at MAI that it did not sting at all. We will numb your face with a potent numbing cream before the procedure, for utmost comfort. There will be no pain once the effect of the cream is gone. The other worry is the fact that there will be peeling, and what will the people think. Have you ever had a sunburn, and did the people cast you out of their lives because of it? Not really, right? The peel is best done on a Thursday afternoon. Shedding will start after about 11/2 days which puts you into Saturday morning. The heaviest shedding takes place over the next two days, and by Monday you have smaller areas of skin left to peel. These can be concealed with make up and moisturizer. You look glorious within 5 days!
